Are you maximizing your front-end retail space?

Have you ever been to Walgreens™ or CVS™ and found empty shelves? These companies know what they are doing. It is the supermarket mentality and it works. They constantly fill every space and wait for the sales to happen… and they do.

Your salon has a regular flow of customers that are already at your store spending money. You have broken down that barrier of trust. This customer is ready and willing to buy if they are presented with the right opportunity.

1 ) Are your retail sales items in full view of your customers?

Having your items in clear view and easy reach of your customers is essential to selling products. All retail items must be positioned directly in the traffic pattern of your salon. People buy on see and feel. It works! If you have a theft problem spend the $200.00 on a locking hexagonal display cabinet and put it at the front of your hallway. If you need more space spend a little more. That money will be made back within days or weeks.

2) Do you have enough stock to get the sale?

There is a reason the supermarket has tons of stuff on their shelves. The reason is that as you and I walk down their aisles we see things and buy them. Despite the fact that we didn’t go there to get that item… we bought it. Happens all day every day. Low inventory levels with 1 or 2 bottles of this or that just do not sell as well. Proven by the biggest retailers in the world.

3) Is your display well merchandised and constantly updated?

Another tip to take from the majors. Develop a purely visual system to display your retail items. Discuss your methods with several friends and/or customers. Now that you have a working method use it. Constantly rotate your selection so that when customers come in they will always find a “new” display. Again this draws the eye to your displays which feeds into the see and feel which plays into the sale.

4) Are your products different from the competition?

Salon retail is a very specific business. You will need to research what sells and bring in those items. You also need to be willing to mark slow sellers down, move them out & make room for fresh new items. Implement a dating system so that you know when items come in. Use this data to control inventory levels and keep thing fresh.

You should routinely visit area salons to get a feel for what lotions & salon retail products they offer, but don’t always assume they know what they are doing. Lotions and Salon Retail Product sales are an important revenue stream. The right choices on what to inventory can mean thousands to your bottom line.
